Slip Sliding Away – Steep Ground on Location

11 November 2022 by osssadmin

Location filming is always trickier than in the controlled environment of the studio, but when you add in factors such as obstructions, weather and access it can really restrict your shooting time and ability.
“Never underestimate a British summer”

What is steep ground? Sounds like a simple question, but one we ask ourselves a lot as members of a Mountain Rescue Team. What might not be considered steep ground by a search party walking up to a casualty, suddenly becomes so when it has subsequently rained, been walked by 30 other people and the task in hand is to carry a laden stretcher back down again.

A bit of rain and lots of boots transformed this
path from an easy route into a real hazard

A sudden rainstorm in a wooded area or open field, coupled with lots of tech’s boots and heavy equipment can quickly turn what was a natural easy path into a slick, muddy slide which is unpleasant at best, dangerous at worst – especially if it is on a sloping hillside. But it’s not impossible – as a specialist outdoor safety provider we clear paths, cut steps and install handlines to make a potential hazard into a safe and useable means of access.

Edge protection is also something to consider – you’re lining up a frame and concentrating on getting that beautiful shot and then all of a sudden you are on your back, sliding down a steep bank. Or worse, over the edge of a rocky outcrop. You don’t want that! You need someone who can look after your crew and equipment keeping them in their correct place, and not getting in the way of your filming.

With a can-do attitude, we work with you from pre-production discussions and tech recce to identify the hazards present in a location. We produce a full risk assessment for the location shoot, alongside a method statement detailing how we will manage those hazards for you to mitigate that risk. That’s what we do.

If you have location shoots in your schedule in an outdoor environment, please give us a call for an informal chat to see if we can help you get the shots you want….safely!

Living on the Edge – Filming at Height

26 March 2021 by osssadmin

You are planning a shot on a cliff edge. There is a tense stand-off between the heroine and her jilted, violent lover. You’ve got the camera on a JimmyJib, the lights on a cherry picker from down below and a drone-cam in the air.

What about the actors? Director? 1st AD? Makeup Artists, Costume, Continuity, Boom operator or even someone carrying a plate of sandwiches or biscuits? There sometimes feels like a never ending supply of people who need to be where that actors are or where the action is going to be filmed.

When people are so focused on carrying out their jobs, under time pressure, the risks can easily be overlooked. A slip or stumble from one of these crucial roles could not only put the shoot in jeopardy, but could land you in a load of hot water too!

Filming at Height

Height is one of the instictive fears in all of us, but incidentally, it is almost always at the bottom where injuries occur. Don’t worry – we build that into our Risk Assessments, Method Statements and on the day safety provision too!

On Sight Safety Solutions Ltd have over 20 years of experience in protecting people (and equipment) in situations like these. Using a combination of high tech equipment and skills drawn from mountaineering, climbing, and caving, we ensure your vital crew and cast are protected from falls or falling objects.

Hidden under costumes, behind plants or removed in post production, our kevlar restraint wires won’t appear on camera but will give the protection you need.

Simply, our sole focus is seeing the risk, owning the risk, and doing what is needed to be done to protect cast, crew and equipment in order to protect the entire production.

Coming back from COVID on a risk-free set

16 March 2021 by osssadmin

We have all had to make changes and compromises, even sacrifices, in order to get over the real threat of COVID. It has had a massive impact on the whole entertainment sector, not just filming.

As the shadow of COVID still hangs in the air, and we are dealing with those risks, we are slowly returning to the sometimes chaotic world of location filming.

On a busy location shoot, there are other risks lurking around in addition to COVID-19. As individual crew members focus on their particular roles, hazards can sometimes be overlooked which can quickly turn into a serious risk.

A hazard IS a risk, right?? No. Think of a sandy beach, with a shark-infested sea. You’re standing on the beach. The shark infested sea is a hazard, but if you remain on the beach you are safe. The risk  occurs when you get into the sea with those pesky sharks. Similarly, on a film set a steep but grassy bank can be turned into a hazard by rain and mud during use, and continued use makes it a risk for the crew and their equipment. Add to this darkness or time pressure, and you’ve got an even bigger risk.

So what to do about it? Take the last picture above. The hazard is the vertical drop to the quarry floor 100 feet below. There is very little risk as the Spark is located behind a bund of rock. Should the DoP have wanted the light closer to the edge, the hazard is the same, but the risk is much greater. In this particular instance, we had pre-rigged ropes with harnesses and tether points for the equipment, with two safety technicians on hand at all times. The hazard remains, but the risk is mitigated.

Our aim is simple:

Filming without Risk

11 February 2021 by osssadmin

There is a perception amongst some that in order to complete any task, let alone one as complex as filming, that risk must be removed.

In short, filming anything without risk is the equivalent of trying to bake a cake without flour or cook an omelette without eggs.

The truth about risk is that it is a constant. This means two things. Firstly, it cannot be removed, but more importantly, it is predictable.

Speak to any Producer, and they will tell you that their job is almost completely about managing risk. The risk of delays due to bad weather, the risk of financial overrun, physical risk to cast and crew, reputational risk to the production company – the list is almost endless.

So, if risk cannot be removed, how can it be managed and who can manage it? Well, if the risks are known, then the mitigation can be put in place, hence minimising the risk through strategy, tactics and operations, instead of trying to remove it. The closer to the middle of the spectrum they are, the less likely they are to change… predictable risk.

Where there is unknown risk, then by definition the mitigation for it is also unknown. Where this is the case, there are two ways to deal with it.

Avoid the situation and abandon the plans for the shoot that you want, or consult with a specialist with the necessary experience and judgement to mitigate risk outside of your area of expertise, especially in a dynamic environment where weather, footfall, terrain, height, water or confined spaces are involved, with the prospect of unknown and changing risk over time.

The staff of On Sight Safety Solutions Ltd are all Mountain Rescue Team members, and in the course of our many rescues, we have seen how a simply grass slope, easily accessible by the first on scene, can quickly turn in to a treacherous hazard. This is where judgement and experience dictates putting in safety measures before the risk presents itself.

As a company we exist solely to assess the risks of locations and the plans for filming, create methods statements and deliver those methods on the day either on or off camera, to ensure the safety of cast and crew from the start of rigging days to the post filming de-rig.

If you are planning on filming on location where there is any sort of potential environmental risk, please do get in touch with us for an informal chat about how we can help you get the shots that you want, safely.

Free Location Safety Consultations

16 January 2021 by osssadmin

As with many industries at the moment, the TV and Film production industry is facing it’s own unique set of challenges, but also with challenges come opportunities.

Whilst the last year has been incredibly hard for most, some companies and organisations have used an enforced slow-down of “business as normal” to plan for the future and implement changes and improvements.

We would like to know what you have planned in the future and, crucially, how we can help you

produce the content that you want without compromising the safety of cast and crew.

Safety-Consultations

We are offering free, no obligation safety planning consultations during Spring 2021.

We can discuss with you your plans to film on location where there is any kind of risk to cast or crew due to environmental hazards. During the consultation we will work with you to develop an understanding of what you want to achieve, and discuss the risks involved, and how these can be mitigated.

In addition, we will talk through our pre-production recce and risk assessment processes, and our ‘on the day’ mitigations and safety interventions, whether on or off camera.

While we would love to come and meet you face to face, and will do so for any pre-production recces, we are offering the consultations via online video meetings. Please use the button below to let us know when is a good time for you.

Duncan Massey retires from TV and Film Safety

28 December 2020 by osssadmin

With the New Year just around the corner, and the TV and Film industry showing signs of returning, we would like to share some news with you.

Duncan Massey, the head of On Sight Safety Solutions for over 30 years, has announced his retirement from the business and the TV and Film industry.

Duncan Retires

Duncan remains a very well known, respected and recognisable figure (possibly due to his 6’4 frame!). He has handed the reigns of On Sight Safety Solutions to his two (not so) young apprentices, Ian Burton and Martin Papworth, who are now joint shareholders and Directors.

Whilst you may not see Duncan on location any time soon, he remains as a non-executive Director and shareholder to ensure his considerable knowledge and experience remains in the business.

On Sight Safety Solutions continue to provide pre-production recces, risk assessments, method statements and safety advice to allow filming to happen safely around height, water, confined space or remote locations.

Unlike conventional “Health and Safety Advisors”, we deliver hands on safety provision, both off-screen and on-screen to ensure the safety of cast and crew.

Our credits include Doctor Who, Casualty, The Spanish Princess, Keeping Faith, The Grand Tour, and more.

We both look forward to working with you in the future and we wish you a productive and prosperous New Year.
